Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba at Walter Reed Medical Center (WRAMC) and National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda) is designed to help improve the lives of injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. By training the warriors in a challenging and rewarding activity it can help facilitate the rehabilitation process and promote mobility.
The program is for OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom) service members under physical therapy and occupational therapy care. The majority of the soldiers have received severe injuries.
SUDS dive instructors are American Red Cross volunteers and former or active duty military using SDI standards of open water dive training. Instructors are also able to provide Scubability™ training for warriors unable to perform a skill to SDI standards.
Run by President John W. Thompson and Training Director Larry Hammonds, SUDS is a 501 © 3 non-profit organization and a chapter of the Wounded Warrior/ Disabled Sports Project.
